(WGTD)---The City of Racine has been awarded a $576,000 state grant to bring laptops and WiFi to nearly 500 low-income residents.
The award is part of a $28 million program announced last week by Gov. Evers.
Racine Mayor Cory Mason said Racine’s share will be used to provide both the technology and the expertise to use the hardware and navigate the internet. "The more time goes by the more we are realizing that if you're not able to connect to the internet and all of its resources that can isolate members of the community and really limit the number of opportunities that people might have," Mason said in a WGTD phone interview.
Tutoring will be done by staffers from the city’s library, community centers and the city's non-profit partners. The city’s I-T department will be actively involved.
The multi-year program is expected to be up and running before the end of the year.
Most of the money is expected to be spent on buying laptops and providing internet connections, he said.
