A long-shot plan to end a two-hour-long standoff at Cliffside Park in Caledonia last July didn't go quite as designed, according documents and body-cam footage released Friday by the state Department of Justice. Authorities had hoped to draw 37-year-old Jesse Patt away from a gun on the ground by throwing a case containing requested cigarettes and a cell phone at him. But the pitch went a bit too far, enabling Patt to lunge toward the gun, even though he'd been struck in the lower-body area by non-lethal rounds that were fired simultaneously. As Patt seemed to be reaching for the gun, police opened fire with lethal rounds, killing him. Patt had been threatening suicide and had been egging police on to shoot him. During the standoff, Patt admitted that he had killed his mother a couple of days earlier. The body of 64-year-old Cheryl Christensen, who'd been shot, was found in her fire-damaged home. Christensen was awaiting trial on charges related to the death of her 46-year-old son.
