(WGTD)---A strong ally of Racine Mayor Cory Mason was picked by his colleagues Tuesday night to serve as city council president.
Maurice Horton, who's been on the council for the past 7 years, defeated David Mack for the job by a vote of 8-7. By an identical margin, Marlo Harmon was elected vice-president over Olivia Davis.
Council presidents preside over informal council committee of the whole meetings and fill in whenever the mayor is absent. The mayor presides over formal council meetings.
Tuesday night's organizational meeting featured the swearing-in of alders who were elected earlier this month. The roster includes four new members: Grace Allen, Nathan Pabon, Malik Frazier and Jens Jorgensen.
Shortly after being elected president, Horton appointed members of the council's standing committees, a duty that had been previously performed by the mayor but was rescinded by the last city council in a re-balancing of power.
