(WGTD)---A Kenosha school board member wants the district to be better prepared to respond to visits by agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Yolanda Adams will introduce a resolution—still currently in draft form—at the board’s April 29th meeting. The resolution, if approved, will start a process that’s expected to lead to the development of a new policy with an accompanying set of rules.
Adams says the district needs to have a firm policy in place if ICE agents try to remove a student from school. An additional concern is the impact of the detention of a parent of a student. "We really do need to be all in agreement on what you do and what you don't do," she said at a board meeting last week. "I think that will calm the fears of the parents."
So far in KUSD there have been no cases of ICE agents trying to either access student information or students themselves. "Just because they haven't come to Kenosha Unified does not mean they're not coming. We're just a smidge smaller than some of the bigger cities where they've already gone," she said. "I believe they will eventually come here."
Another concern is making sure each student has updated contact information on file that includes back-up contacts.
